Black British History
World War One
Soldier
Second Lieutenant

Walter Tull was born in April 1888 in England to a black father from Barbados and a white mother from Kent.

He was one of six children who lost both mum and dad at a young age. Walter and his brother Edward were sent to live in a Children's Home in East London but the harsh realities of his early life didn't stop Walter from succeeding.

Walter Tull went on to become one of England's early black footballer pioneers playing for Tottenham Hotspurs and other clubs.  He then went on to become 2nd Lieutenant, a black officer which at the time was illegal and war hero in World War one although the government denied his family  Walter's medal.
